Nobody likes flying economy. Not really. We do it because of price, convenience, seat accessibility and ... well ... did I mention price?
So let's talk about the common courtesy aspect of sharing space with your fellow travelers, specifically the seat recline option.
I know it's comfortable for you to put your seat back the moment the fasten seatbelt light goes off (Ok, last night's flight had the jerk in front of me reclining while we were still going up). But what about the person who is sitting behind you?
Economy gives you enough room not to feel the need to whack someone when everyone has their chairs in their upright position with the tray tables fastened. When the person in front of you leans back (i.e. reclines their chair), you have their headrest approximately 10 centimetres from the tip of your nose.
I know. Some of you feel it's your God-given right to do whatever you want to do as long as YOU are comfortable on the flight.
But let me give you a hint. The person who is sitting behind you is a lot less likely to kick your chair, repeatedly and at different angles, if you are courteous. Keep your seat up. If you must recline, recline only partially so the person behind you can still move.
Last night's idiot suggested that I would be happier in business class, and he isn't wrong. But failing that, an upright chair in front of me will do just fine.
Oh, and he chose to move to the back of the plane because his light didn't work. I'm thinking it was karma. ;-)
